Quando parliamo di sperimentazione animale stiamo facendo riferimento ad una pratica appartenente al passato remoto della storia dell’uomo, incredibilmente sopravvissuta fino ai giorni nostri. Poteva avere un senso, questa pratica, allorquando si cercava di studiare la morfologia degli animali e di compararla a quella degli uomini. Ma stiamo parlando di un’epoca ante Cristo, dei tempi del Corpus Hippocraticum e dei Procedimenti anatomici di Galeno. Oggi questa pratica ha perduto ogni parvenza di scientificità, ed è solo una delle tante testimonianze di come l’uomo ritiene di poter disporre della vita degli animali, come se ne fosse il padrone.
Non è un caso che il primo sostenitore della pratica vivisettoria fu Aristotele, che ne fece oggetto di un trattato, intitolato Parti degli animali. Chi si occupa dell’impianto filosofico che sostiene la battaglia per i diritti degli animali si trova spesso a citare Aristotele come uno dei pensatori che ha maggiormente influito nel creare una barriera tra noi e gli animali. Lui pensava che la società fosse costruita come una piramide, al cui vertice si trovava l’uomo adulto ellenico. Ai piani inferiori vi erano, via via, gli uomini non ellenici, le donne, gli schiavi, fino ad arrivare agli animali. Ed era un bene – secondo lui – che gli esseri superiori potessero disporre di quelli inferiori, perché ciò avrebbe avvantaggiato questi ultimi. Qui si pongono i primi mattoni di quella barriera che è stata eretta tra noi e gli altri animali.

E difatti, ogni qualvolta si verifichi che i rapporti di forza si vengono a ribaltare, siamo subito pronti ad abbatterle, queste barriere. Ogni anno vengono fatti milioni di test dalle industrie farmaceutiche per verificare la nocività di prodotti medicinali, e milioni sono gli animali che muoiono inutilmente, perché ormai tutti gli studi scientifici sono concordi nel ritenere che i test sugli animali hanno una validità minima per controllare la nocività di un medicinale per un uomo. Normalmente le medicine vengono testate su specie differenti, e le industrie farmaceutiche utilizzano i risultati migliori per ottenere le autorizzazioni alle immissioni sul mercato. Se però, poi, accade che quelle medicine provocano danni agli uomini, partono le guerre contro le industrie farmaceutiche. Quando “noi”, per sbaglio, ci troviamo ad essere “loro”.
Il rapporto “noi/loro”, a ben vedere è il motore di tutta la fantascienza, e sta alla base anche di un interessante esperimento mentale proposto da Desmond Stewart nel racconto “Vennero i Troog e dominarono la Terra”. I Troog sono extraterrestri molto più intelligenti e potenti di noi che, dopo essere sbarcati sulla terra ed averne preso possesso, "giustamente", secondo la nostra stessa visione the world's dominant start to treat men as we treat animals. La verità è che ogni specie vivente può essere modello soltanto di se stessa. Lo dimostrano i veleni che, come la stricnina e la cicuta, per dirne due su mille, sono ottimo cibo per vari animali da esperimento.
L’inaffidabilità della sperimentazione su “modello animale” ai fini della ricerca biomedica è stata ufficializzata da organi scientifici della massima importanza e credibilità negli ultimi anni, quali il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche statunitense. Quest’ultimo ha invocato la necessità di un “cambiamento epocale” nella ricerca tossicologica attraverso un “passaggio by a system based on the study of the animal to a system based on in vitro methods, now in a position to assess how a substance affects the function of genes in human cells. " It would be a turning point, compared with the discovery of DNA or the birth of the first computer.

Paesi come la Germania, Spagna, Francia Irlanda e Austria mostrano, addirittura, un forte incremento, mentre l’Italia mantiene tristemente il quinto posto nella classifica degli animali usati, dopo Francia, Regno Unito, Germania e Spagna.
Con questa iniziativa noi intendiamo avanzare la nostra richiesta per cui nell'iter di recepimento nazionale della Direttiva (ci sono due anni di tempo) vengano inserite disposizioni per favorire lo sviluppo concreto di metodi che non facciano uso di animali, limitando nei fatti il ricorso agli animali, per un futuro basato su una ricerca scientificamente corretta e libera dal vincolo arretrato del modello animale. Parimenti chiediamo il divieto senza deroga dell’uso di animali a scopo didattico.
Vorrei chiudere questo mio intervento citando una delle più celebri frasi del Mahatma Gandhi: “la vivisezione è il più nero dei neri crimini che l'uomo commette contro Dio e la bellezza del suo creato”.
