would like to thank Professor Pasqualone, I wanted to offer the opportunity to make this meeting here at the University of the Free Age.
The topic that was assigned to me and Moreno Bernini, as part of the Center for Environmental Education "Buendia," is very broad, and is linked to issues of environmental protection. Many are then
topics that could talk. I'm always interested me in particular, more specifically, to protect the animals, but even if you only want to take this issue, many things would be interesting to consider.
Prey, for example, recent changes in terms of cruelty to animals. You all know, because he talked a lot about the press last summer, which came into force in Italy a law, No 189/04, which, acknowledging the many instances of animal welfare groups, have reformed their legislation on animal abuse, providing for penalties much more stringent than those set forth above.
until shortly before the entry into force of this law, you could take a dog per strada e ridurlo in pezzetti, e la cosa più grave che ti poteva capitare era una multa.
The new law provides for approval by regional, as well as more careful regulation of kennels, a ban on using animals in circuses, festivals and in the glories of the country, to use animals as prizes in lotteries or other games. This law also provides that the paths in the parks are reserved for dogs, which are established pensions for dogs, you can access even the dogs in public places and on public transport, with appropriate caution, and all reflecting of increasing attention and sensitivity of the animal world. But
there is one thing more important than where you ought to speak, for the moment that prevails over all others because it is an emergency that affects us closely, very closely, though it might not seem like I am referring to the massacre of seals that work is underway in some countries, particularly in Canada.
E 'from 29 March, in fact, that has opened the seal hunt in Canada, and we Italians are among the main perpetrators of this massacre, as the skins of seals are mainly exported to Western countries, and among these, especially in Italy.
I say it is an emergency because, in this case is not about whether or not to be against hunting in general.
And you think that the average life of a seal is thirty years.
Second, hunting methods are of unspeakable cruelty and barbarism, because the baby seals are killed with a hammer on the head. Later, these seals are skinned, but beware, because in most cases the beatings did not cause the immediate death of seals. The law provides that the hunters should carry out testing of conditioned reflexes, but no hunter loses time, and almost all the seals are skinned alive.
Third, all this barbarism is not needed to meet the primary needs of life, such as food. The animals are not killed for consumption as food delle popolazioni indigene.
Sono i Paesi occidentali europei who want it all, and the massacre must be stopped, not only in Canada but also in other countries which hunt seals with the same methods, namely Norway, Greenland, Russia. Since 2004, the Norwegian Palmento has even legalized the hunting of seals by tourists. In all, we are talking about millions of seals.
Then, there are two things we can all strive to do right away.
First, be careful when we go into a clothing store, not buy clothes with seal skins, and accessories with inserts or even scraps of animal fur.
Second, you can join the petition of the LAV, which aims to remove the problem at its source by promoting the adoption a bill to ban the trade in seal skins all over the country.
is not a law utopian. The United States already have this legislation, and also in Europe, Belgium has decided to ban the trade in seal skins on their territory. In Italy, LAV, with the same system, has managed to get a law that prohibited the trade of skins of cats and dogs, which was previously possible.
the hope that this brief intervention to convince you to sign the petition, and to support this important battle against the hunting of marine mammals as a nice, sweet, and helpless, I conclude my speech, thanking you for your attention.
